Despite Expecting Star Trek: Discovery To Last 7 Seasons, Sonequa Martin-Green Doesn't Have "Unfinished Business" With Burnham

Sonequa Martin-Green doesn't have "unfinished business" with Captain Michael Burnham after Star Trek: Discovery ended with season 5. The first Star Trek on Paramount+ series, Star Trek: Discovery's final episode aired in May 2024 after Paramount+'s surprise decision to end the show in 2023. Star Trek: Discovery's series finale, "Life Itself," was an extended episode that concluded with a special coda revealing the fate of Admiral Michael Burnham and the USS Discovery decades later.

Despite Expecting Star Trek: Discovery To Last 7 Seasons, Sonequa Martin-Green Doesn't Have "Unfinished Business" With Burnham

ScreenRant: Burnham got her happy ending, but I know that this was supposed to run six seasons. Is there still unfinished business that you have, or that you want to resolve personally with Michael Burnham?

Sonequa Martin-Green: It's funny that you say that it was supposed to be six seasons because in the very beginning, it did seem like it was going to be a six-season situation because the contract with Pinewood Studios was for six years, and there were some other things. But we actually assumed that it would go for seven [seasons], so it was a bit of a shocker. TV has completely changed, though, and I always say that because it's a totally different landscape.

But I can honestly say that I don't feel like I have any unfinished business because we jumped ahead.

Why Sonequa Martin-Green Doesn't Have Unfinished Business With Star Trek: Discovery's Michael Burnham

Discovery Gave Burnham A Happy Ending

Sonequa Martin-Green seems content with how Star Trek: Discovery ended, and, understandably, she is comfortable leaving Michael Burnham behind. Star Trek: Discovery season 5's ending reunited Burnham and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala), after their romance was fractured in season 4. Star Trek: Discovery's epilogue then jumped ahead 30 years to reveal Michael and Book happily married after 30 years, and their son, Leto (Sawandi Wilson), is a Starfleet Captain.

After Admiral Burnham imagines an emotional reunion with the USS Discovery's crew on the bridge, she then launches her starship on its final mission, which syncs up with the events seen in the Star Trek: Short Treks episode "Calypso." Rather than leave off with a cliffhanger or keep fans wondering, Star Trek: Discovery wrapped up Michael Burnham's story in a satisfying way and gave her a happy ending that Star Trek Captains rarely receive.

Our Take On Sonequa Martin-Green Leaving Star Trek: Discovery & Michael Burnham Behind

Maybe Sonequa Will Return To Star Trek One Day

Although Admiral Michael Burnham's ending is now known, other Star Trek: Discovery stories remain to be told. Star Trek: Discovery could return one day in some form, perhaps in a made-for-Paramount+ streaming movie or some kind of revival. Sonequa Martin-Green might also reprise Captain Burnham in a guest spot on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which is set after Star Trek: Discovery. Given the endless possibilities of Star Trek, it's hard to believe Sonequa Martin-Green won't play Michael Burnham again someday.

However, Sonequa Martin-Green has moved on from Star Trek to new opportunities. Following her acclaimed role in the feature film My Dead Friend Zoe, Martin-Green joins Boston Blue, a spinoff of Blue Bloods on CBS. Sonequa plays Detective Lena Silver opposite Donnie Wahlberg, who reprises Detective Danny Reagan. Sonequa Martin-Green has left Captain Michael Burnham and Star Trek: Discovery behind (for now), but she will always be an indelible part of Star Trek.
