Detroit Lions lose WR Tre'Quan Smith to hand injury; Dan Skipper's ankle OK

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The competition for the back-end jobs in the Detroit Lions' wide receiver room might have gotten a little more condensed.

Head coach Dan Campbell said wide receiver Tre'Quan Smith suffered a hand injury in Saturday's 24-23 win over the Kansas City Chiefs that could keep him out "for a little while."

Smith played nine snaps Saturday and did not have a pass thrown his way. He's one of the more experienced players among a group of receivers competing for a roster spot behind Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and Kalif Raymond.

Smith played in one game last season for the Denver Broncos and five seasons for the New Orleans Saints before that, including 2018-20 when Campbell was the team's assistant head coach. He did not catch a pass this preseason.

Depending on the severity of his injury, the Lions could place Smith on season-ending injured reserve, cut him with the intention of giving him an injury settlement (with the potential to re-sign him later in the season), or keep him on the roster until the NFL's Aug. 27 roster cut deadline, which would allow them to activate him from injured reserve once healthy.

Undrafted rookie Isaiah Williams had team highs of six catches and 71 yards Saturday and has impressed in his bid for a roster spot, and Kaden Davis, Donovan Peoples-Jones and Daurice Fountain are among the other receivers competing for a roster spot.

Campbell said the Lions appear to have avoided any other serious injuries Saturday. Swing tackle Dan Skipper left the game with an ankle injury but does not appear to have anything that will keep him out long-term, and linebacker Malik Jefferson left with a finger injury.
