Adding Depth at Cornerback

On March 21, 2025, the Lions signed veteran cornerback Avonte Maddox, a Detroit native, to bolster their secondary. Maddox, a fourth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2018 NFL Draft, spent seven seasons with the Eagles, primarily as a nickel corner.

In 81 games (41 starts), Maddox has recorded 36 pass breakups, four interceptions, eight forced fumbles, three sacks, and 270 total tackles. Despite being undersized at 5-foot-9 and 183 pounds, he is known for his aggressive and physical playstyle.

A former standout at Martin Luther King High School in Detroit, Maddox’s return to his hometown adds an experienced presence to the Lions’ defensive backfield.

Re-Signing Key Defensive Pieces

The Lions also retained defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad on a one-year deal, announced on March 19, 2025. Muhammad joined the Lions midseason in 2024 and played in nine games (two starts), tallying 11 tackles, three sacks, and five quarterback pressures.

Having previously worked with head coach Dan Campbell and former defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn in New Orleans, Muhammad quickly adapted to Detroit’s defensive scheme. His return adds valuable depth to a defensive end rotation that includes Aidan Hutchinson, Marcus Davenport, and Josh Paschal.

On March 18, 2025, the Lions also re-signed defensive lineman Pat O’Connor. A seventh-round pick in 2017, O’Connor spent seven seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before returning to Detroit in 2024. He was elevated from the practice squad in Week 7 and played in 12 games before suffering an injury in the final game of the season.

O’Connor, 31, recorded 18 tackles, one sack, and two tackles for loss last season. His versatility to play both defensive end and nose tackle makes him a valuable depth piece for the Lions’ defensive line.

High Expectations for the 2025 Season

With these key offseason moves, the Detroit Lions are reinforcing their roster and preparing for a highly anticipated 2025 season. The combination of veteran experience and young talent signals the team's commitment to building a balanced and competitive squad. Fans can expect an exciting season ahead as the Lions continue their pursuit of playoff success.
