Joe has no problem listening to a fashion podcast if Bucs intrigue can be found.
So that’s why Joe caught rookie returner/receiver Tez Johnson on a recent Mizzen+Main show featuring his brothers, Broncos quarterback Bo Nix and Jacksonville State safety Caleb Nix.
The subject of uniform numbers arose and Johnson made it clear that the worst possible number for him to wear would be “anything in the 80s.”
The Bucs handed him No. 83.
Johnson, who weighed just 154 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine, noted that wide numbers are rough on him because of his size. A bad number, he said, “it kills the confidence.”
Joe assumes Johnson wanted a single-digit Bucs jersey or something between 10 and 19 after he was drafted in the seventh round. However, per Joe’s team of 13 1/2/ interns at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters, all those Bucs numbers already were assigned except for No. 12.
That’s the jersey number worn by Tom Brady, who was gifted “12” by Chris Godwin when Brady arrived in 2020.
Did Johnson ask for No. 12? It sure smells like he did and was denied.
The potential good news, if Johnson makes the roster, is that a Bucs player with a number between 0 and 19 is likely to be cut before opening day. CFL punting star Jake Julien, who wears No. 16, is a safe bet.
