The Washington Capitals picked up a tight victory on Wednesday over the Predators, but it almost wasn't too be after a dreadful miss from Dylan Strome.
Behind a vintage campaign from Alex Ovechkin, the Washington Capitals are rolling early in 2024/25, posting a 9-3-0 mark through their first 12 games of the season, and that success continued on Wednesday evening. The team would ultimately come away with a 3-2 victory over the struggling Nashville Predators, but it may have not ended up that way after a dreadful missed empty net from forward Ryan Strome threatened to derail their momentum.
A video of the missed empty net was quickly posted to social media, and unsurprisingly, fans in the comments flocked to the video to make fun of the veterans unfortunate play.
Despite the miss, the team would go on to pick up the tight win, and given that the goaltender Juuse Saros was making an attempt at the puck, it may not have been the worst miss we've ever seen. In fact, one fan quickly pointed out that it wasn't even the worst one in the history of the Strome family at the NHL level.
Even with Strome missing an easy goal, he leads the team in points with an impressive 19 in 12 games, with 15 of those coming via the way of an assist, and after this attempt at goal, it's easy to see why he leaves that to the likes of Alex Ovechkin, who has 8 on the season thus far. At the end of the day, this was a miss that ultimately didn't hurt the Capitals and would end up being quite the funny video to post on social media, especially given Ovi's reaction to the play, but with Strome leading the way for a resurgent Washington team, they once again look every bit the Stanley Cup contenders they were hoping to be after an off-season full of moves.
