The Philadelphia Eagles saw their biggest fear come true on Sunday when the team lost to the Washington Commanders. Star quarterback Jalen Hurts was knocked out of the game with a head injury, and it was revealed that he suffered a concussion.
Hurts is now in concussion protocol, but the latest update on the signal caller spells trouble for him potentially suiting up against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.
According to NFL insider Lindsey ok, "Jalen Hurts (concussion) estimated as DNP Wednesday."
Hurts did not practice on Wednesday, which is already not a great sign for his availability on Sunday. Should he miss Thursday and Friday due to remaining in concussion protocol, he will likely be ruled out.
To make matters worse, backup quarterback Kenny Pickett is also banged up, which could lead to the Eagles taking drastic measures to sign a plug-and-play option.
Mike Garafolo also shared that the Eagles have brought in former quarterback Ian Book for a visit. Bookis likely insurance in case Pickett finds himself also being ruled out, but losing the first and second-string quarterbacks before a huge division decider is not ideal.
Should the Eagles defeat the Cowboys this Sunday, they will lock up the NFC East. However, losing Hurts is already going to make that feat difficult to achieve. It would be even more difficult should Pickett also not be able to suit up.
The only other healthy quarterback on the depth chart right now is second-year option Tanner McKee.
As stated, Book was brought in for a visit and could be signed and added to the roster in the coming days depending on how the injury report shakes out for both Hurts and Pickett.
Book played for the Eagles in 2022. He followed that up by playing for the New England Patriots practice squad in 2023 and the practice squad for the Kansas City Chiefs this season.
The Eagles might be a bit careful with Hurts, who will need to remain healthy for when the team heads to the playoffs. They are already guaranteed a spot in the postseason, but the goal is to win the division to host a playoff game at home.
Concussions can be tricky, and it would be better to allow Hurts the proper time to heal. Even if he happens to clear concussion protocol following his week, the Eagles might still want to keep him sidelined for insurance purposes.
