Eagles' silence during offseason provides massive upside in SI's main takeaway

This was an unusual offseason for the Philadelphia Eagles, which is usually filled with firework-moves that anger the rest of the NFL with how they "stole" a player or "robbed" a team during a trade.

Eagles retaining key free agent listed as one of the best moves of offseason

No, the 2025 offseason was all about rewarding some of their top talent on the roster while letting a lot of them walk in free agency. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman sought to revamp the roster with younger players while saving money for future big contracts that were on the horizon.

The new strategy has led to some interesting observations from the media on whether this is the right approach for Philadelphia. Sports Illustrated senior NFL writer Albert Breer shared his observations of each NFL team's offseason, with the Eagles being the silent ones of their moves over the last few months.

"I think the most interesting thing about the Eagles’ offseason is how quiet it’s been. Outside of extensions for Saquon Barkley, Lane Johnson and Zack Baun, some contract tango with Dallas Goedert, and some noise from outgoing guys such as C.J. Gardner-Johnson, it’s been all business in Philly. Perhaps the biggest question heading into camp is how Kevin Patullo goes about replacing Kellen Moore as OC."

Sometimes, quiet is okay, and the Eagles will prove it in 2025

Philadelphia's roster is already so deep despite the number of players that left in the offseason. From offense to defense, this team is stacked with tons of talent.

Starting with the offense, Mekhi Becton is the only offensive starter from last year who is gone. Quarterback Jalen Hurts still has an insane supporting cast with Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert to work with. Hurts' offensive line features Lane Johnson, Jordan Mailata, Cam Jurgens, and Landon Dickerson, all of whom are there to protect him.

Defensively, Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter lead up front with Zack Baun and Nakobe Dean as two of the top tacklers on the team. The secondary is young, but deep, with Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean breaking through as rookies in 2024, and Reed Blankenship poised to take on a more leadership role in 2025.

To address one of the team's biggest concerns, Patullo has been named the new offensive play caller and is expected to be successful. Why? He has been hands-on with offensive strategy sessions with Moore and Eagles' head coach Nick Sirianni last year and understands what makes this offense go. This is nothing like Brian Johnson two years ago.

Philadelphia is loaded at many positions and boasts a young team. The reality is that the Eagles didn't need to go out and acquire any big-name free agents because they already have all the necessary weapons in place.

There may be some bumps and bruises along the way at the beginning, but the Eagles are poised for a strong 2025 season with an insane roster.
