Eagles still must address these 4 positions to repeat as Super Bowl champs

Even the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles have some gaps on their roster that might prevent them from repeating as champions.

This offseason was about offloading any and all talent that would cost the Eagles too much money and bringing in high-potential young players for cheap to develop into stars. The intention is seemingly to give the other young players on the roster a chance to step into the starting lineup to see if they have what it takes to compete at the highest level.

2025 should be another excellent season for the Eagles. Still, four positions are concerned that an upgrade in free agency could help get Philadelphia back to lifting the Lombardi Trophy next February.

Eagles must address these positions before 2025 season

Safety

The loss of C.J. Gardner-Johnson might be the one that is most felt throughout the team, as he was one of the emotional leaders in the locker room. Without Gardner-Johnson, Reed Blankenship will have to help solidify the safety position.

Sydney Brown and Tristin McCollum were expected to come in and replace Gardner-Johnson's spot. The Eagles used the draft to select Texas safety Andrew Mukuba with their second-round selection, putting him in the conversation.

Free agent safety Justin Simmons has been attached and reportedly wants to play in Philadelphia to reunite with Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. That would be an ideal starter at the other safety position, so Philly can give Mukuba at least one year to learn and develop behind Simmons.

Right Guard

Another gut punch to the Eagles' roster this offseason was losing Mekhi Becton, who received a nice payday with the Los Angeles Chargers. That left Philadelphia with filling the void at right guard that Becton was occupying.

Kenyon Green was acquired as part of the Gardner-Johnson trade with the Houston Texans. The 24-year-old guard showed potential as a first-round pick of the Texans, but has not lived up to expectations, which makes him more of a project. Matt Pryor was brought back to Philadelphia this offseason after playing for three teams in the last five years.

Former Commanders and Jaguars guard Brandon Scherff could make for a reliable choice in free agency to sign after being an All-Pro guard in 2020. Green and Pryor don't give much reassurance that they will be the right choices, but offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland would be the one guy to make it work. Scherff, at least, would give the Eagles insurance if it doesn't work with Green.

Wide Receiver 3

A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are arguable one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL and have carried the Eagles' passing game over the last three years. Outside of them, though, there is not much to be excited about in the wide receiver room.

Jahan Dotson was traded to the Eagles before last season, but he underwhelmed to the tune of his worst statistical season as a pro. Johnny Wilson and Ainias Smith were drafted late in the NFL Draft last year. but did not get the opportunities to play on the field as often. Terrace Marshall Jr. was brought in during the offseason to add depth, but he's never exploded onto the scene as a top receiver.

Amari Cooper has been tied to the Eagles as he would make a more reliable No. 3 receiver than the others. Philadelphia is leaning on either Dotson, Wilson, or Ainias Smith to step up, but getting a good veteran for cheap like Cooper would be an instant upgrade.

Edge

This position lost some top talent to free agency, with Josh Sweat going to the Arizona Cardinals, and while he isn't an edge rusher, pass-rushing DT Milton Williams joined New England Patriots. The defensive line took a major hit and the Eagles still have work to do to find their replacements.

Philadelphia went with the cheap, but young, high-potential route with its signings. The Eagles brought in Azeez Ojulari and Joshua Uche, who are each under 26 and have great potential.

Bryce Huff, Nolan Smith Jr., and Jalyx Hunt are the Eagles' returning edge rushers. Huff is the most significant question mark, as he underperformed after the team traded for him from the New York Jets.
