The Philadelphia Eagles‘ primary worry this offseason will be keeping their stalwart defense intact after multiple free agents departed for pastures new, including Darius Slay, Josh Sweat and Milton Williams.
But the team will also have to think about depth at one current area of strength – wide receiver. Whilst AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith are both standout, elite players in their own right, the Eagles have very few solid options behind them at the position.
Current third choice wideout, Jahan Dotson, managed just 216 receiving yards in the regular season after Philadelphia gave up a third round pick for his services last offseason. And no other wide receiver on the roster managed even 50 yards in 2024.
As such, the Eagles would certainly benefit from taking out some Brown/Smith insurance in the form of a solid WR3, even if they expect Dotson to improve upon a disappointing third season in the league.
One option could be to trade for a receiver from the Green Bay Packers, who have substantial depth at the position. But instead of going after Romeo Doubs, who many media members across the league feel could be on the trade block, Philadelphia could be better suited to make a move for a different wideout – former fifth round pick, Dontayvion Wicks.
Could Dontayvion Wicks Be A Difference Maker In Philadelphia?
Whilst Wicks is far from a household name, he has sneakily become one of the better route-running WR3s in the NFL.
An excellent rookie season was followed by a sophomore year that saw him took half a step back, but there is no doubt that the best football of the Virginia alum’s career is in front of him.
In fact, Wicks excels in almost every area of his game, with one exception – ball handling. His drops have been a major concern for the Packers. In 2024, Wicks had the joint-third most drops in the entire league (9), and the joint-fifth highest drop percentage at 11.8%.
But ball-handling and drops is certainly one facet – unlike speed, for example – that can be developed and improved over time. And if the Eagles can help improve that facet of his game, he could be a dangerous weapon for them in tandem with Brown and Smith.
What Would It Take To Get Dontayvion Wicks To Green Bay?
It is not clear if Packers head coach, Matt LaFleur, and general manager, Brian Gutekunst, would be willing to part with Wicks. Although both have had their fair share of frustrations towards the player, he has been a productive auxiliary weapon with continually developing upside.
Much of their willingness to send Wicks over to Philadelphia will hinge on their future plans for Doubs, whose contract is up at the end of the season, and could also be on Eagles’ radar.
And it is unlikely, if the trade compensation offered by Howie Roseman is competitive, that Green Bay would have an issue trading to an NFC rival – despite the Eagles knocking the Packers out of the playoffs in 2024.
Philadelphia Eagles receive: Dontayvion Wicks, 2027 seventh round pick.
Green Bay Packers receive: 2026 fourth round pick, 2026 seventh round pick.
