FRISCO - It's almost over.

The Dallas Cowboys' 2024 season will come to a screeching halt on Sunday against the Washington Commanders at AT&T Stadium ... at which point a wild offseason will commence.

That offseason will start with a Jerry and Stephen Jones decision about the future of coach Mike McCarthy, who will officially be out of contract on January 14.

Between Sunday and that date, other NFL teams can ask permission from the Cowboys to interview Dallas' lame-duck coach; the Cowboys can decline.

But if the Joneses don't make a decision by January 14? McCarthy is an unfettered free agent.

Is that what he wants?

In his final scheduled weekly visit on "Shan & RJ'' on 105.3 The Fan, McCarthy on Friday expressed a pair of thoughts that some think are hints about not only his feelings but also his future.

On the one hand, he waxed eloquently about his love of this community and this job.

It's been a great experience for our family,'' he said. "It's been an awesome experience for our family. It's the Dallas Cowboys. It's one of a kind. I love coming to work everyday. I love the players and the coaches ...

McCarthy took the time to mention and praise the school his kid attends. But in listing his "love for the players and the coaches ...'' he somehow neglected to mention any "love'' for the guys who sign his checks.

Strategic? Revealing? Is this a hint of a Jerry Jones-related mistake? Or just kinda like the actor who wins an Oscar and then forgets to thank his wife?

And one more nugget: At the end of the visit, McCarthy fielded a cleverly-framed and seemingly innocuous question.

"Coach, are we going to do this (weekly radio show) again next year?''

"Yeah,'' McCarthy repliled, "I hope so, I hope so, to be honest with you. ...''

And again we ask ... Strategic? Revealing? A hint? A mistake?

The 2024 Cowboys on the field, in a nutshell? The problems were easy to see.

The 2025 Cowboys in charge? The problems have yet to be addressed as all parties involved sort through the love and the strategy and the eventual big reveal.
