Minnesota Vikings Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss and ESPN, his current employer, issued major news one day before Super Bowl 2025.

Adam Schefter broke that news via X on Saturday, February 8.

“A huge welcome back: Hall-of-Fame WR Randy Moss is returning to ESPN’s NFL Countdown, Sunday, 10 [a.m. ET], live from New Orleans,” Schefter wrote.

Doctors diagnosed Moss with cancer in late 2024, which the on-air personality revealed publicly approximately two months ago in mid-December. Health professionals located the cancer in Moss’s bile duct, which is located near his liver and pancreas — both major internal organs.

Moss underwent a surgery on Thanksgiving Day, in which surgeons placed a stent in his liver. Then, in early December, Moss went under the knife for six hours as part of a cancer-removal operation.

The former Vikings wideout entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018. Moss amassed 982 receptions, 15,292 receiving yards and 156 TD receptions over the course of his 14-year NFL career. He earned six Pro Bowl selections and four First-Team All-Pro selections over that span.

Moss will turn 48 years old next week.

Randy Moss Vowed He Would Return to ESPN as Soon as Possible

Questions about Moss’s health began to arise after he appeared on “Sunday NFL Countdown” wearing a pair of sunglasses. He explained his attire publicly, which led to more questions and more speculation.

“I just wanted to let the viewers know that me and my wife and my family, we are battling something internally. You know, I have some great doctors around me,” Moss said. “I couldn’t miss the show. I wanted to be here with you guys, [and] I feel great. But if you all see me with these Michigan turnover glasses that I have on, it’s not being disrespectful because I’m on television, man. I’m battling something.”

Moss was off of the show for a little more than two months as doctors gave him treatment for his condition, including chemotherapy and radiation. When announcing he was stepping away, however, Moss stated a clear intention to return as soon as possible.

“As soon as I get healthy to get back out with guys, I will be on set,” Moss said, per ESPN. “Hopefully, I can be with you guys soon. My goal is to get back on television with my team.”

Moss will now return for the final episode of “Sunday NFL Countdown” of the 2024-25 season ahead of a 6:30 p.m. ET Super Bowl kickoff between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.

The contest is a rematch of the Super Bowl two years ago, which the Chiefs won by a score of 38-35. Kansas City opened as a 1.5-point favorite in Sunday’s game, though that line has dropped to the Chiefs favored by one point as of early Sunday morning.
