Spring training is underway, but teams around the league aren’t done making additions to their rosters.
Veteran pitcher Matt Moore agreed to a minor league deal with the Boston Red Sox on Thursday. Moore debuted with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2011 and has spent time with seven other major league organizations throughout his 13-year career, including the Philadelphia Phillies.
Matt Moore had one of his worst seasons with Phillies in 2021
After spending the 2020 season in Japan, Moore signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Phillies before the 2021 season. The left-hander had one of the worst seasons of his career with the Phillies.
Moore had a 2-4 record with a 6.29 ERA and 1.59 WHIP, both the second-worst of his career. He served as a swingman, making 13 starts and 11 appearances out of the bullpen. He had a 1-4 record with a 6.55 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 56 1/3 innings as a starter and had a 5.40 ERA in 16 2/3 innings as a reliever.
It was an underwhelming season for Moore and one he would like to forget. Luckily for the Phillies, the organization didn’t commit much to him and avoided a situation like Taijuan Walker.
His brief time in Philadelphia was Moore's worst season since posting a 6.79 ERA in 102 innings in 2018 with the Texas Rangers.
Moore rebounded in 2022, posting a 1.95 ERA in 74 innings pitched with the Rangers. He spent most of the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Angels, where he had a 2.66 ERA in 41 appearances before being claimed off waivers by the Cleveland Guardians in August.
Moore made five appearances with the Guardians before being claimed off waivers by the Miami Marlins, where he made four appearances. The 35-year-old went back to the Angels in 2024, posting a 5.03 ERA across 48 1/3 innings pitched.
The 2013 All-Star, who has a career 4.39 ERA and 1.39 WHIP will try to earn a spot in the Red Sox’s bullpen during the rest of spring training.
