Season 2 of “The Last of Us” is slated to premiere in April 2025, and the series creators have already revealed how many episodes fans can expect.
Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, who are also writers and showrunners for the post-apocalyptic drama series, shared during a June 2024 interview with Deadline that there will be seven episodes in season 2 of “The Last of Us.”
Just as season 1 is based on the 2013 video game “The Last of Us,” season 2 is an adaptation of the game’s sequel, “The Last of Us Part II.”
“The story material that we got from Part II of the game is way more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the start was figure out how to tell that story across seasons,” Mazin said. “When you do that, you look for natural breakpoints, and as we laid it out, this season, the national breakpoint felt like it came after seven episodes.”
The surplus of material means that Mazin and Druckmann are hoping to make a third and fourth season, although HBO has yet to renew the show past season 2.
“We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3], because we’re taking our time and [going] down interesting pathways, which we did a little bit in Season 1 too,” Mazin said. “We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4.”
Although season 2 will be shorter than The Last of Us’ debut season, which had nine episodes, Mazin teased that one season 2 episode is nice and long.
“There’s an episode that is going to be … I don’t know if I would say feature length but quite big [in length],” he said.
When does season 2 of “The Last of Us” premiere?
While HBO has not yet announced a specific release date for season 2, it seems highly probable that “The Last of Us” will return on Sunday, April 13.
The season 3 finale of another popular HBO series, “The White Lotus,” will air one week prior, leaving the Sunday night time slot open. It would make sense for “The Last of Us” to fill that gap.
If “The Last of Us” does premiere on April 13, the season 2 finale would fall on May 25, barring any weeks off.
Who is in ‘The Last of Us’ season 2 cast?
In addition to returning cast members Pedro Pascal (Joel) and Bella Ramsey (Ellie), several fresh faces will appear in season 2 of “The Last of Us.”
The newcomers include Kaitlyn Dever as a soldier named Abby, Isabela Merced as Ellie’s love interest Dina, and Jeffrey Wright as militia leader Isaac Dixon.
