Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Calvin Austin III is dealing with a minor abdominal muscle injury that has caused him to miss the last two weeks, according to Alan Saunders of Steelers Now.

Austin’s injury has continued to mystify, and head coach Mike Tomlin said at this point he is ‘day-to-day’ while working his way back. Last week, Tomlin was hopeful that Austin would ‘perk his way’ back up in the coming days.

“We’ll see. At this point, I’ll describe it as day to day. I know he’s working his way back to us and had a good rehabilitation day today, but still, at this point, I’d describe it as day to day,” Tomlin said.

In his place, Roman Wilson, Scotty Miller, and others have seen more work, giving the Steelers a chance to evaluate their wide receiver room without Austin around.

Austin, who is also the team’s starting punt returner, is a dynamic playmaker who the Steelers have continued to embrace as a big part of their offense.

Mike Tomlin named Austin their starting punt returner last week when asked about that part of his role changing as Austin receives more work as a wide receiver.

“I like him there. He’s got a desire to be the best in the world. He’s made some dramatic improvements. He was moving in that direction over the course of the last season. He’s excited about taking another step in that area,” Tomlin said.

Austin is still going to be the team’s slot wide receiver and is coming off his best season as a receiver, too. The Steelers hope that it can manifest itself into an even better season as he enters the last year of his rookie contract.
