Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers will mark the completion of Jameson Williams' two-game suspension for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing substance policy. That suspension set the positive momentum he had built since the offseason off-course.
Then last week, news came regarding his involvement in a gun-related incident back on Oct. 8. More specifically, according to WXYZ-TV in Detroit, the Detroit Police Department is investigating why he was released from custody.
There is a lot to be determined for Williams in relation to the gun incident, as the police investigation is ongoing and charges may or may not come. In the range of potential eventual outcomes is another suspension from the NFL, this time for a violation of the personal conduct policy. Per the policy, a criminal conviction is not necessary for a suspension to be given.
But as it should, the NFL usually waits for the legal process to play out before deciding on discipline in situations like Williams'. And the legal process can take a lot of time to be completed.
Update on Jameson Williams confirms his status for Week 10 and beyond?
On Sunday morning, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero had an expected update on Williams' status after his two-game suspension is complete.
"#Lions WR Jameson Williams is scheduled to be reinstated from his two-game PED suspension on Monday."
"The NFL continues to monitor legal developments in an unrelated gun case, which could take a while to play out. So, Williams can play starting Week 10."
So Williams will be back in the building on Monday, and he will be able to suit up for a big Week 10 game against the Houston Texans on "Sunday Night Football."
It's worth noting Williams was at practice for a couple days heading into Week 8, before he accepted his two-game suspension in the window of time where he could have appealed. So he hasn't missed as much practice time as he otherwise might have under the circumstances.
Looking beyond Week 10, it would likely take something being announced regarding the police investigation into the gun case and/or charges being announced to move the needle negatively with Williams' playing status.
