When Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff signed his massive contract extension earlier this offseason, he was one of the highest-paid signal-callers in the NFL, and was easily the highest-paid in the division. But things have changed quickly, at least in terms of his status in the division.
On Friday night, the Green Bay Packers gave quarterback Jordan Love the bag, with NFL Network's Ian Rapoport revealing the young signal-caller has gotten a four-year, $220 million deal.

Love's deal surpasses Goff's in terms of total value ($220 million to $212 million) and annual average ($55 million to $53 million). It also pushes Goff down the list of the league's highest-paid signal-callers, according to Over the Cap.
But Love wasn't the only quarterback to push Goff down the list of the highest-paid quarterbacks. The Miami Dolphins gave Tua Tagovailoa a four-year, $212.4 million deal on the same day, according to Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, which works out to an annual average of $53.1 million, barely surpassing Goff's.
The Jordan Love deal feels a bit like the first contract the Rams gave Jared Goff (though not apples-to-apples). Makes sense to invest, despite the inexperience. Risk is real.

Biggest diff: Goff had back-to-back heater years and a Super Bowl. Love had a great back half last yr
With those two extensions done, Goff goes from third in total value and annual average to fifth in both categories. And, his slide might not be done, as Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is also due for an extension.
The Lions took a lot of heat for giving Goff the money they did. Whether you agree with it or not, it's hard to deny that Goff might be the safest bet to to live up to his contract as things stand currently.
After all, Tagovailoa and Burrow both have injury concerns, Love remains unproven after just one season as a starter, and Trevor Lawrence has been disappointing after being billed as a generational talent coming out of college.
Meanwhile, Goff has been at the head of an elite offense the past two seasons and has made deep runs in the playoffs with two different teams, including with the Lions in 2023.
Burrow might be the best player of the top five, but Goff is the surest bet.
