The Washington Commanders’ dream season came to a crushing halt in the NFC Championship Game, thanks in large part to turnovers that undid their strong start to the postseason. After dominating the turnover battle through the first two playoff games, the Commanders turned the ball over four times against the Philadelphia Eagles, resulting in a 55-23 defeat that ended their Super Bowl aspirations.
Washington, who had prided themselves on ball security, had been tied for the eighth-fewest turnovers in the regular season. But their turnover troubles reared their head on the biggest stage, with each misstep costing them dearly. The Eagles capitalized on Washington’s mistakes, scoring 28 points off the four turnovers. The Commanders’ rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, who had led his team to an impressive playoff run, struggled to keep the offense afloat.
“It just sucks,” Daniels said after the loss. “We all just meshed. We got to this point, but at the end of the day, we lost. It sucks, but we’ll move on from this.”
The game started with a promising drive for the Washington Commanders, but a fumble by Dyami Brown handed the Eagles a short field and set up Saquon Barkley’s second touchdown. Just when the Commanders had a chance to get back into the game late in the first half, another fumble by Jeremy McNichols on the ensuing kickoff allowed Philadelphia to score another quick touchdown.
“Turnovers play a huge factor into a game, especially playing a good team like Philly,” Daniels noted.
By the third quarter, with the Commanders trailing 34-23, Washington had cut the Eagles’ lead to just 11 points and seemed poised for a comeback. However, a critical fumble by Austin Ekeler near midfield sealed their fate and all but ended their chances of a comeback.
Head coach Dan Quinn acknowledged the turnovers were a major issue, but also pointed out that the Eagles’ defense had caused the mistakes. “We didn’t create any opportunities for us and lost four, and 28 points off of those four turnovers. That was big,” Quinn said.
Despite the loss, Jayden Daniels remained optimistic about the future. “I can’t be prouder of the guys in the locker room. Year 1,” he said. “Obviously, it sucks. We’ll move on from this.”
The Eagles proved once again to be the Commanders’ kryptonite, having forced 10 turnovers in three meetings this season with only two of their own. Washington had just 10 turnovers in their other 17 games. The turnover battle has become an all-too-familiar storyline for the Commanders in their playoff exit.
As the Philadelphia Eagles advance to Super Bowl LIX, the Commanders will be left reflecting on what could have been. They’ll also look to fix their turnover issues, which doomed them in this championship game.
