Jerry Jones ripped by Cowboys insider for 'arrogant grab-bag' HC search

Over the past few days, momentum has been building for Brian Schottenheimer to be the next Dallas Cowboys head coach, and now the former offensive coordinator has had an official interview for the position.

Jerry Jones ripped by Cowboys insider for 'arrogant grab-bag' HC search

Cue the collective scream of Cowboys Nation.

With 105.3 The Fan's Shan Shariff first on this, the Cowboys possibly hiring Schottenheimer as head coach goes with the theme of Jerry Jones being "comfortable" with how things are currently rolling for the organization.

This was an opportunity to turn this ship in a different direction in an attempt to pull away from the 30 years of failure, but it appears that the Cowboys might be sticking to the same formula that has gotten them to a level that doesn't measure up as Super Bowl success.

And that's why our 35-year Cowboys insider Mike Fisher is working to point the blame in the right direction.

"Don't rip Schottenheimer; what's he supposed to do, turn down the interview?'' Fish says here on his Fish Report Video Visit. "The culprit here is Jerry's blind self-confidence that he can win by operating by the seat of his pants. He believes that doing so actually gains him an advantage, when outside of drilling oil wells according to his gut, there is no football proof of him succeeding this way.

"Increasingly - because we damn sure know the original plan wasn't to oust Mike McCarthy and replace him with his figurative nephew/clone - Jerry has made it obvious that he's flying blind. ... starting with the Deion Sanders charade.

"And that's an arrogant decision that promotes his 'solo mission' ego and his Cowboys brand ... but one that threatens to destroy the team's chances of fulfilling its potential.

"Don't blame the guy who gets interviewed or the guy who gets hired. Blame Jerry.''

Fish points out that in the case of Schottenheimer, the media and the fans have no idea whether he can be a successful head coach.

But here's the next part that Jerry must consider when it comes to Schotty.

If Jerry does hire Schottenheimer as head coach—and that's a not-so-big if —the next thing the Dallas owner will have to do is try to sell the hire to the fan base.

Jones has a reason to be arrogant in this department, but ... That will be no easy task.

With Cowboys Nation wanting change, the potential hire of Schottenheimer, who is essentially cut from the same cloth as Mike McCarthy as an offensive coach, isn't a move that would inspire too much confidence going forward.

Given the lack of want to even talk to Bill Belichick or Ben Johnson, even if neither were ever going to take the job, at least have a phone call. But it never happened. Yet another failure in this coaching search.

The likes of Liam Coen, Joe Brady, and Robert Saleh, the latter of whom had an interview at The Star, would all be seen as a change of scenery of sorts and be a deviation away from what Jerry and Dallas normally do.

Fisher has coined the phrase, "The Dallas Cowboys seem like a marketing company that plays football on the side," and if Schottenheimer is hired to be the next head coach, Jerry will need all his marketing genius to spin the move to land well with fans.

Again, to be clear, this isn't Schottenheimer's fault and there needn't be blowback on him for being considered, it is Jerry's and the alarming lack of a plan of attack here.

Did Jerry have a plan, but his candidate in mind got a job elsewhere? Or is his ideal candidate still out there? To go from Deion Sanders (still no interview by the way, cue shocked face), to not even interviewing the "top" candidates out there like Bill Belichick and Ben Johnson, to then end up with Schottenheimer or Kellen Moore, gives this the feeling that Jerry doesn't really know what the plan is, if there is even one at all.

The whole process of this hiring cycle could be considered laughable, and it's one that even Jerry, with his marketing genius and way with words, won't be able to put a positive enough spin on it for Cowboys Nation.
