It turns out, that when Browns star Myles Garrett won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2023, he felt that in addition to a trophy, he should have gotten accolades and huzzahs from his peers. So when Steelers star TJ Watt appeared to complain about the outcome of the DPOY voting, Garrett was not very happy.
Garrett won the award last year, garnering 165 votes to Watt's 140. Watt did not criticize Garrett for his win, but did not show up at the NFL awards event, and later suggested that losing to Garrett was one reason. Garrett has said he still is not happy about that, and after the Browns beat the Steelers last Thursday night, Browns insider May Kay Cabot indicated that the whole thing has fueled Garrett.
"What happened was TJ Watt poked the bear when he tweeted about those NFL Honors awards last February," Cabot said. "That really stuck in Myles' craw. It hurt him. JJ Watt, his brother, kinda chimed in on that. Myles firmly believed that was his moment. They stole his thunder. TJ stole his thunder."
On Wednesday, TJ Watt's brother, JJ Watt -- the future Hall of Famer who had been dragged into the sorta-beef--said the whole thing made no sense to him. Sure, TJ Watt was bummed out to lose the award, but he never knocked down Garrett for it.
Appearing on "The Pat McAfee Show," Watt said, "I’ve literally never said a single bad thing about the guy. What happened? ...Find one negative comment I ever said about the man. I literally only speak positively about him. I would love you to find a comment."
He said not only has his brother been positive about Garrett, but he has, too.
