The Kansas City Chiefs have survived their first injury scare of training camp.
Wide receiver Justin Watson limped off the field after making a sliding catch during practice on Wednesday and spent a lengthy amount of time in the injury tent. He was then carted off to undergo further tests.
Fortunately for Watson and the Chiefs, it has been determined that it is a minor foot issue that should only cost him a few days, per our friend Matt Derrick at Chiefs Digest.
While Watson may not be one of Kansas City's top weapons, he's a solid contributor who knows the offensive system well and can be a sneaky deep threat at times. Young receivers such as Xavier Worthy and Nikko Remigio will benefit from having Watson's leadership and worth ethic on the field.
On the flip side, there will be opportunities for other Chiefs receivers to show out while Watson is sidelined for a few days. The players will begin padded practices on Friday, which will raise the competition bar big time. With Watson, Worthy, Rashee Rice and Hollywood Brown being pretty much locked into making the roster, there will likely only be two more WR spots available.
Watson set new career highs in receptions (27), yards (460) and touchdowns (3) last season. He also had five catches of 30 yards or more. Watson made two crucial catches in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LVIII that helped the Chiefs twice tie up the game. Watch for him to contribute in a variety of ways on special teams as well, such as gunner or return man.
