The superstar running back could return in Week 10.
The San Francisco 49ers could have their best offensive weapon back in action when they take the field for their next NFL contest.
Superstar running back Christian McCaffrey has missed each of the Niners' first eight games to open up the 2024 NFL season as he deals with Achilles tendonitis in both legs. But with a Week 9 bye, the San Francisco organization is hopeful that CMC will return to action in Week 10.
On Monday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said McCaffrey is going to "hit it hard" in practice over the bye week in order to prepare for his potential return against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Nov. 10.
The 49ers plan to open McCaffrey's IR window next Monday.
"It’s going to be nice getting him back, hopefully," Shanahan added.
McCaffrey, the NFL's reigning Offensive Player of the Year, finished the 2023 season with a league-leading 1,459 rushing yards and 2,023 yards from scrimmage. He also recorded an NFL-best 21 rushing and receiving touchdowns.
With McCaffrey out starting in Week 1, the 49ers running back room has been led by third-year rusher Jordan Mason. During Sunday night's Week 8 win over the Dallas Cowboys, Mason suffered a shoulder injury and was ruled out for the remainder of the contest.
Rookie RB Isaac Guerendo finished the game as the Niners' leading rusher with 85 yards and a touchdown.
The 49ers are 4-4 to start their 2024 campaign.
