Lakers Must Prioritize Defense at Deadline amid NBA Trade Rumors | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors | Bleacher Report

The rumors will certainly be heating up with Dec. 15 approaching. That is the first day players who signed new contracts in the offseason are eligible to be traded. The Lakers are rumored to be out on Brandon Ingram, but they will be searching for upgrades.

Jake Fischer made the team’s plans clear (subscription required) in his latest piece. Here is a look at what the Lakers’ are reportedly targeting and how it could help them get into serious contention.

Rumors: Lakers want big man and perimeter defense ahead of trade deadline

Fischer’s intel says LA is searching for frontcourt help and to upgrade their perimeter defense. The Lakers are 26th in defensive rating and rebound percentage. They are struggling mightily with transition defense and have wanted a big man next to Anthony Davis for years.

There will be no shortage of centers available before the deadline. The Lakers could add an All-Star like Nikola Vucevic or just acquire a depth piece. Isaiah Stewart is an interesting target, despite his previous beef with LeBron. Rob Pelinka must find an impactful option that improves their odds of winning.

The Lakers could desperately use some athleticism and defense on the perimeter. Finding someone to plug the gaps and slow down the opposition’ lead ball-handler is a must. Getting someone capable of handling the ball and operating as a secondary creator would be a plus. Los Angeles cannot take back more money than they send out in a trade, but options will be available.

Nobody should be shocked by the Lakers’ start. They were in the Play-In Tournament for two straight years and did little to upgrade their roster since their 2022 run to the conference finals. Pelinka and the front office desperately need to improve things before Feb. 6. They should already be working the phones and trying to plug their holes.

Los Angeles Lakers fans should gear up for plenty of rumors as the trade talk heats up. LeBron James turns 40 later this month and this could be their final chance to chase a championship with him. There will be options available, but it will cost the Lakers draft capital. Does Pelinka give up the necessary picks? Stay tuned because only time will tell.
