Now that September is here, we are starting to see free agents around the NHL sign professional tryout (PTO) agreements. The Lightning have made one PTO addition thus far, inviting Logan Brown to training camp. Two former Lightning players who have also recently signed PTOs are Tyler Johnson (Boston Bruins) and Austin Watson (Detroit Red Wings).
When looking at the Lightning's current roster, it is clear that they could benefit by inviting at least one more player to training camp on a PTO. The right-wing position, in particular, could use a boost, so one player whom the Lightning should consider taking a shot on is Blake Wheeler.
Wheeler, 38, is one of the best players still available on the free-agent market. The Plymouth, Minnesota native had a down year with the New York Rangers in 2023-24, as he had just nine goals and 21 points in 54 games. However, when looking at his past success, it is fair to wonder if he could bounce back if he lands another NHL gig.
Just back during the 2022-23 season with the Winnipeg Jets, Wheeler had 16 goals and 55 points in 72 games. He also had 60 points in 65 games in 2021-22 and 46 points in 50 games in 2020-21. As a result, not very long ago, he still produced like an impactful top-six winger. Due to this, he may be a player worth taking a look at during training camp this year for the Lightning.
If Wheeler impressed during training camp and earned a contract, he would give the Lightning another option for their middle six. In addition, due to his offensive skill, he could also be a candidate for power-play time.
