Lightning Should Give Former First-Rounder Big Chance

The Tampa Bay Lightning should consider inviting this forward to training camp.

The Tampa Bay Lightning made a minor move last month, signing forward Logan Brown to a professional tryout (PTO) agreement. The 26-year-old was under contract with the Lightning last season but did not appear in a single game due to injury. However, after getting this PTO, he will now look to earn a contract with the Lightning for the 2024-25 season.

WHL Draft Day Steals: Kailer Yamamoto - The Hockey News Western Hockey League

 Right wing Kailer Yamamoto (56)

While the Lightning already have Brown signed to a PTO, they should consider the prospect of inviting at least one more forward to training camp. When looking at their forward group, it is rather apparent that they could use a boost at the right wing position. One interesting free agent who could be worth taking a flier on through a PTO because of this is Kailer Yamamoto.

Yamamoto is one of the top free agents who are still without a home at this juncture of the summer. The most likely reason behind this is that the Spokane, Washington native had a rough 2023-24 campaign with the Seattle Kraken. In 59 games for the Pacific Division club, he had just eight goals and eight assists.

However, Yamamoto possesses the potential to turn things around if given another opportunity. This is because he has shown in the past that he can provide solid secondary scoring. For example, during the 2022-23 season with the Edmonton Oilers, he set career highs with 20 goals, 21 assists, and 41 points in 81 games. In addition, just back in 2022-23 with Edmonton, he had 10 goals and 25 points in 58 games.

With this, Yamamoto could be a pretty solid player for the Lightning to take a gamble on with a PTO. If he impressed during training camp and got back to his previous form, he would be a solid addition to Tampa Bay's forward depth.
