The Detroit Lions are projected by many prognosticators to select a pass rusher at some point in either the first or second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. With Aidan Hutchinson standing out as the only above-average player Detroit has in this area, the need is clear and obvious.
While many expect Detroit to take advantage of a draft class that is very deep at both defensive tackle and edge rusher, the idea of using their first few picks elsewhere and perusing the trade market for a more noteworthy upgrade could give the Lions the edge they need in a very competitive NFC.
With the Cleveland Browns likely zeroing in on Colorado star Travis Hunter with the No. 2 overall pick, the New York Giants are now projected to pick a starting edge rusher for the next decade in Penn State star Abdul Carter at No. 3 overall. After paying Dexter Lawrence and Brian Burns, former top pick Kayvon Thibodeaux may be squeezed out of a starting role.
If Thibodeaux, who was picked No. 5 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft after Hutchinson was nabbed at No. 2 overall, is going to be available on the market at some point in the immediate future, look for Brad Holmes to make a move.
Lions should consider Kayvon Thibodeaux trade amid Giants' Abdul Carter rumors
Thibodeaux has had an up-and-down career with the Giants. After tallying four sacks as a rookie, Thibodeaux's numbers jumped up to 11.5 in 2023 before falling back down to five in 2024. Thibodeaux, who earned a 69.0 PFF grade, has produced at the rate many would expect from someone picked in the middle of the first round, not a No. 5 overall choice.
Thibodeaux may need a fresh start in order to reach his full potential. A team like Detroit, who is both a contender and in need of his services on the edge, might be the perfect place for him. Even though the sack numbers might not show is, his speed off the edge is a weapon.
Considering the fact that Thibodeaux will need to be paid soon, the Lions might be able to get him without surrendering a pick in the first two rounds. No player they pick outside of the first round will impact the game like Thibodeaux.
The Lions can't leave Draft weekend without a new starting edge rusher. If the picks don't end up falling their way and many of their top targets are off the board, Thibodeaux should be right at the front of Holmes' mind.
