The Detroit Lions entered the 2025 offseason with a bit of a quarterback situation on their hands.
The team didn't have a backup QB they were certain they could depend on.
They signed a veteran option in Kyle Allen to try and bring a bit more stability to that spot on the roster.
While Allen has yet to actually win the backup spot on the Lions' depth chart, Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox believes his only competition could still be on the trade block.
In a recent article discussing quarterbacks NFL teams need to pursue trades for right now, Knox named Lions QB Hendon Hooker as a player both the Chicago Bears and New York Jets should be pursuing right now.
To start off with, this assumes one thing that I'm just not really sure is true anymore. It assumes that Hooker is on the trade block.
I just don't think that's realistic at this point unless the Lions are convinced Allen can reliably serve as their backup QB.
We're just a few days away from the Lions kicking off their preseason in the Hall of Fame game.
That gives them no time to replace Hooker if they were to deal him.
I'm still not convinced that Hooker is the answer for the Lions. They had little enough trust in him last season that they brought Teddy Bridgewater out of retirement for the playoffs.
At 27 years old, I just don't think he's going to be improving enough to go from there to becoming a dependable backup.
For now, though, he's what the Lions have available and it would be very surprising to see them move on from him right now, especially if it meant sending him a division rival.
He gets the chance to start proving he's the right guy for the job on Thursday against the Chargers.
