There has been growing concern among Dallas Mavericks fans over the last week that their head coach, Jason Kidd, was getting ready to leave to coach the New York Knicks. With a contract extension he signed during last year's playoffs and Cooper Flagg to look forward to, it seemed like an extreme move if he actually planned to force his way out.
After what seemed like a near-disaster from the Mavs organization, Dallas denied the Knicks permission to interview Kidd along with four other teams. This shows Dallas made the right decision, keeping the Knicks organization in suspense and not giving them access to Kidd. This also helped save a wild conspiracy that could've changed the modern NBA, with the Knicks possibly pursuing Kidd as a way to later trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks.
This is one of the more radical theories we've seen in a while, and if so, the Mavs may have just saved the rest of the NBA from a chain reaction. Now, the Mavs, nor the Bucks, have to worry, considering Milwaukee would like to keep Antetokounmpo anyway.
It seemed like the Mavs always had more of the cards anyway to keep their head coach in Dallas. They could've just simply denied any access to Kidd to keep it simple, and that's exactly what happened.
Knicks fans were hoping for a trio of Antetokounmpo, Jalen Brunson, and Karl-Anthony Towns with Kidd as the head coach on the sideline. The only problem would be very similar to the Phoenix Suns over the past two years. They simply wouldn't have enough depth. The Knicks don't have enough bench depth to begin with, and they'd probably have to give up Towns anyway.
The first step in securing the pipe dream of getting Antetokounmpo to the Knicks would have been them trading for Kidd, and having the chance to rejoin his old coach in New York and contend for a title could have been enough for him to request a trade to go there.
It's still a long offseason, and the Knicks could still have their eye on Antetokounmpo, while Milwaukee is likely going to try incredibly hard to keep him unless something changes over the next few months. Bucks GM Jon Horst has stated that he wants whichever team trades for Antetokounmpo to take a gut punch and make whichever team look worse than they did before.
This rumor of Kidd leaving for the Knicks was a long shot and was probably never in the works anyway (since he is under contract in Dallas), but it's good to know that Patrick Dumont stayed true to his roots to keep Kidd as the head coach. The only worry was Nico Harrison's silence speaking volumes and how he really doesn't seem afraid of whatever happens. After all, he did say that he might bury himself in about 3-4 years in the days following the trade.
It's pretty clear that Kidd is the coach for the future in Dallas, and when he gets to coach Flagg, his job with the Mavericks should become even more satisfactory.
