Could the Brewers make right-hander Freddy Peralta available for a trade?
With Milwaukee hovering around .500 in a stacked National League, the chances of securing even a wild card spot may turn out to be slim. The Brewers could choose to capitalize on a market with few sellers and get a return on a coveted arm.
Buster Olney of ESPN proposed that idea and suggests the Yankees as a potential landing spot for Peralta, “one of the league’s best starters this year.”
“For the Yankees, he could be a bedrock behind Max Fried and Carlos Rodon," Olney wrote. “If Peralta stays healthy, his value will never be higher than it is now.”
Through eight starts this year, Peralta is 4-2 with a 2.18 ERA , 1.04 WHIP and 48 strikeouts over 45 1/3 innings pitched.
Peralta is affordable, making $8 million this year. The Brewers hold an $8 million club option for the 28-year-old next year.
The Yankees’ rotation has been hit with significant injuries since spring training. Gerrit Cole is out for the year due to Tommy John surgery. Luis Gil (lat) is out until at least the end of June and Marcus Stroman is on the injured list with a knee issue.
Last week, the Yankees designated Carlos Carrasco for assignment.
