The Boston Red Sox have a lot of talent this season, but they need to add another starting pitcher to their roster. The top name on the market is likely to be Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara.
But how would the Red Sox get a deal like that done?
It would likely cost the Red Sox multiple top prospects to bring in the righty, but Alcántara has multiple more years of team control and the potential to return to his Cy Young caliber ability.
David Schoenfield of ESPN recently hinted the Red Sox could use top prospect Franklin Arias as a trade chip for Alcántara.
"Roman Anthony is a nonstarter, but maybe Marcelo Mayer? Trevor Story is still under contract for two more years after all," Schoenfield wrote. "With Mayer, the Marlins could shift Xavier Edwards to second base. If not Mayer, Arias and Cespedes are high-upside young infielders in Single-A ball (Arias is off to a terrific start)."
Arias is likely going to be the top prospect traded if the Red Sox end up making a blockbuster deal this season.
Boston already has Rafael Devers, Kristian Campbell, Trevor Story, and Alex Bregman in the big leagues. Marcelo Mayer is ready to crack into the big leagues at any moment.
This depth leaves Arias as a distant piece in the future of the Red Sox's infield. With so much depth ahead of him, he's expendable, yet valuable to another team in a huge trade like one for Alcántara.
