The Boston Red Sox have shown interest in star third baseman Alex Bregman this winter. According to most reports, they're one of the teams left in the running for the two-time All-Star.
However, Bregman and the Red Sox have yet to come to an agreement on a deal, and there could be multiple reasons for that.
From the sound of things, that's all likely due to his contract demands.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Bregman is now seeking a six to seven-year deal.
"Free agent third baseman Alex Bregman still has no interest in a short-term contract and seeks a 6- or 7-year deal," Nightengale wrote.
Bregman has been one of the better third basemen in Major League Baseball over the past decade, but at 30 years old and coming off a quiet campaign for his standards, teams seem hesitant to give him a deal for six to seven years.
If the Red Sox are the ball club he signs with, and the deal is for six or seven seasons, that'd be somewhat of a risk.
The ideal scenario would be to get Bregman on a two to three-year deal. Perhaps if there are opt-outs in a long-term deal, it could make sense, but he certainly won't want team options in his contract.
