Overlooked Eagles signing helps alleviate underappreciated position concerns

After handing out settlements to Danny Gray and Marcus Tate , the Eagles have made another transaction ahead of their first preseason game. After the current Long Snapper, Charley Hughlett, was listed as limited due to a neck injury, Philadelphia opted for rookie Christian Johnstone out of Appalachian State.

The move comes as the Eagles begin a new era at the position. Rick Lovato had manned the position since 2016 (due to a Jon Dorenbos injury), taking over full time in 2017 and appearing in every game from 17 to 2024, including the Eagles' two Super Bowl victories.

Charley Hughlett is in his first year in Philadelphia after 11 seasons with the Cleveland Browns (14-24) and is going into his 14th NFL season. Hughlett was released in February as the team opted for UFL alum Rex Sunahara and signed with the Eagles in March as free agency began. Hughlett provides the Eagles with a veteran presence; however, he is now 35 years old, and many think this could be his final chance to extend his accomplished NFL career.

How Johnstone helps the current Eagles' long snapper situation

The position of long snapper is a highly volatile position that often goes through massive turnover on an NFL roster. Hughlett, for example, was signed and released over 13 times before finding stability with the Browns for 11 seasons. His predecessors, Lovato and Dorenbos, have also experienced similar highs and lows before finding success in their NFL careers.

The newcomer Johnstone will now find himself in the spotlight after a six-year career at App State, where he appeared in 65 games. Johnstone earned All-Sun Belt honors, in addition to honorable mention All-American Honors as well. Johnstone previously attended the Denver Broncos' rookie minicamp; however, this stint with the Eagles will be his first NFL contract.

For a team that values consistency at one of the sport's most underappreciated positions, it should not surprise fans if Howie Roseman takes a younger and cheaper option. With the Eagles enjoying consistent snaps from Dorenbos and Lovato throughout the past 20 seasons, Johnstone can make a push for the 53-man roster this fall. It is unknown right now if the Eagles worked out any other long snappers.
