The Green Bay Packers received a great deal of criticism when they made the decision to trade Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets last offseason. The reason for this decision, of course, was because they felt it was time to hand the keys of the offense over to Jordan Love, whom they traded up to pick in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Despite the fact that Rodgers got hurt and was out for the year in Week One, fans and analysts alike still criticized the Packers as Love and his group of first and second-year pass catchers struggled early in the 2023 NFL season. These doubters were silenced, however, when Green Bay (on the strength of Love’s throwing arm) won seven of their last ten games and clinched a spot in the NFL Playoffs.
Jordan Love Had the Best Season by a First-Time Starting Quarterback in Green Bay Packers History
Through seven games, Love was completing just 57.7% of his passes. He had 1,492 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and a passer rating of 78.2. Worse still, the Packers were 2-5.
However, the Packers went 7-3 in their final ten games while Love completed 68.7% of his passes for 2,667 yards, 21 touchdowns, just three interceptions, and a passer rating of 108.2.
Overall, Love finished his first year as Green Bay’s starting quarterback with a completion percentage of 64.2%, 4,159 passing yards, 32 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a 96.1 passer rating.
Neither Rodgers nor Brett Favre had as good overall numbers in their first seasons as the Packers starting quarterback:
As seen in the graphic above, Love had a better completion percentage, more yards, more touchdowns, a higher passer rating, and fewer interceptions than either of his Hall of Fame predecessors.
This is a big reason why Green Bay and their fans wanted to see Love extended this offseason.
Many Expect Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love to Get a Massive Contract Extension
Last offseason, Love signed a two-year contract with the Packers that gave him a raise for his fourth NFL season and bought out his fifth-year option. Based on his play last season, it was obvious that he was going to be underpaid this year. Additionally, his play proved that he is the long-term answer at quarterback in Green Bay and that the Packers should lock him up as soon as possible.
At the beginning of this offseason, many believed that Love would make roughly $46-48 million per year. However, the Detroit Lions gave Jared Goff $53 million on his extension, leading many to believe that Love would make at least $50 million himself.
However, the Jacksonville Jaguars then gave Trevor Lawrence $55 million per year on his new deal, which has led to the belief that Love will command more than that, and as much as $60+ million per season.
And based on how he performed last season compared to Lawrence, it is a fair assumption:
Both the Packers and Love had told reporters previously that they wanted to get a deal done before the start of training camp. However, training camp is right around the corner, and nothing has officially been announced.
However, Packers fans on social media believe that a deal has already been agreed upon and that it has simply not been made public.
Green Bay Packers Fans Believe the Team Has Already Given Jordan Love a Contract Extension
Earlier today, a social media post indicating that the Packers and Love had come to an agreement went viral on X (formerly Twitter):
Packers fans responded with the following posts:
Packers players report for training camp on Sunday. The NFL world will see if this is true at that point, one would imagine.
