Packers Have The Two Of The Most Overpaid Players At Their Positions – Report
The Green Bay Packers are looking to make that final push at a championship in 2025, but roster wise they have struggled to find legitimate blue-chip, game-changing talent across the broad scope of the roster.
And whilst the depth chart as a whole reveals few deficiencies – with perhaps only corner looking like an area of potential liability, some of the players that Green Bay are paying are perhaps not – or projected not to – cut the mustard.
Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport went through the most overpaid player at each position in the league, and had not one, but two Packers on the list; at interior offensive line and edge rusher – Aaron Banks and Rashan Gary.
Packers’ Recent Acquisition The League’s Most Overpaid IOL – Davenport
“Like Moore, Aaron Banks recently changed teams,” Davenport wrote on Thursday, “signing a four-year, $77 million pact with the Packers several months ago….Banks is a capable guard who started 43 games over four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. But he barely ranked inside the top 50 at his position in overall grade at Pro Football Focus, and PFF’s Mason Cameron ranked the 6’5″, 325-pounder as the No. 32 guard in the league in 2025.
He’s the sixth-highest paid player at the position and another example of an average talent being overpaid in free agency by a team in need of help up front.”
Banks certainly raised eyebrows when he landed a four year deal worth over $19 million per year, given he is yet to be selected to a single Pro Bowl, and has not really earned the title of a top 10 – let alone borderline top-five guard in the NFL.
But the Packers like him for his power and physicality, something that has been sorely missing from their teams against and increasingly capable and physically imposing NFC North division.
And more importantly, they seem him as a strong future investment who projects better than he is at this point in time, something that is buoyed by the fact that he has improved in each of his seasons in the NFL.
Packers Star Edge Rusher Falls Short Of Expectations
Davenport also believes that seventh year edge rusher, Rashan Gary is the most overpaid at his position, despite players like Myles Garrett and Maxx Crosby earning substantially more at this point in time.
“Rashan Gary ranks ninth among edge-rushers in average annual salary—he inked a four-year, $96 million pact with the Green Bay Packers in 2023.” Davenport wrote, “Admittedly, there’s more to playing the position than just quarterback sacks—Gary’s acumen against the run helped get him named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in 2024.
But the 27-year-old is being paid well north of $20 million a season to rush the passer. And while his so-so sack numbers are concerning enough, his drop in pressures is that much more worrisome.
Gary isn’t the only edge-rusher in the NFL who hasn’t lived up to his contract. But a compelling argument can be made there isn’t a player at the position under more pressure to have a big year in 2025.”
Gary is a trickier situation, given that he has shown flashes of impressive play – and indeed made his first Pro Bowl this past season. But generally speaking he still looks like a third or fourth year player looking to make that final leap into the elite tier of pass rushers, something that should be in his wheelhouse given his exceptional physical traits.
The Packers will be hoping that in Year 7, Green Bay finally gets their money’s worth from the former Michigan star.
