Packers Host 6’5' Canadian Quarterback For Pre-Draft Visit

If the Green Bay Packers learned anything from last season, it's how valuable it is to have a reliable backup quarterback.

Last year, Jordan Love suffered a sprained MCL in Week 1. Malik Willis took over and led the Packers to a 2-0 record while Love recovered. Without Willis and his ability to execute the offense effectively, Green Bay would not have made the postseason.

Willis will enter the final year of his rookie contract and should hit the open market in 2026. As a result, the Packers will soon need to find a new backup quarterback, and they are doing their homework on potential draft targets.

According to Justin Down of the 3DownNation, the Packers hosted Laurier quarterback Taylor Elgersma on a visit.

Wilfrid Laurier, located in Ontario, Canada, may not be the most prominent name in the quarterback conversation for this draft class. However, Taylor Elgersma has been making waves for the Golden Hawks. Last year, he completed 73.8% of his passes for 4,252 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. His performance earned him an invite to the 2025 Senior Bowl, making him only the second player in U Sports history to receive such an honor.

Elgersma, standing at 6'5'', is a pocket passer with good deep-ball accuracy and a natural feel for throwing on the run. He also shows strong efficiency with RPOs, a cornerstone of Matt LaFleur’s offense.

One downside to his game is that he faced lower-level competition in college. Additionally, he struggles to navigate the pocket and extend off-schedule plays.

He is not the most athletic quarterback, and considering how Malik Willis' athleticism elevated Green Bay's offense last year, the Packers may want a new backup with the same traits as Willis. Elgersma could still be an interesting developmental project. Given time as a third-stringer, he could grow into a solid backup who can manage the offense effectively.
