Packers missed a scrutinized starter more than they would like to

Center Josh Myers has constantly been perceived as the weak-link of the offensive line. Since he was taken ahead of Creed Humphrey in the second round of the 2021 draft, Myers has been scrutinized by his up and down performances. The flashes are there, but the consistency isn't, and that's a huge part of being a successful NFL offensive lineman.

Packers missed a scrutinized starter more than they would like to

So when Myers was ruled out against the Detroit Lions because of a wrist injury, that was an obviously bad piece of news because losing a starter for such a big game is impactful. But there were fans wondering if the offensive line on the field would be the best possible — and, more important, it could be the 2025 offensive line, since Myers is slated to be a free agent.

Well, things weren't so great.

Elgton Jenkins moved from left guard to center, and his performance against the Lions was underwhelming. The weather didn't help, for sure, but Jenkins' snaps were off the entire game, including some really bad ones that cost the Packers a drive in the third quarter.

"The fumble snaps, it comes down to the ball being wet, rainy, we gotta do a better job with the exchange between me and Elgton," quarterback Jordan Love said after the 24-14 loss. "It happened too many times for sure."

Execution was one of the main reasons for the Packers loss, and head coach Matt LaFleur wasn't happy about how it went down.

"We had false starts, we had bad snaps, the ball was on the ground," LaFleur mentioned. "Just way too many mistakes. You cannot do that against a good football team, because they are gonna make you pay."

The Packers offensive line had the first NFL start for rookie Jordan Morgan, who surprisingly played at left guard . Jenkins moved to center, and Sean Rhyan was kept at right guard.

Josh Myers isn't the center of the dreams for any NFL team. This season, he's had his worst career PFF grade (49.9), allowing 13 pressures in 282 pass-blocking snaps. But if the Packers want to move on from him in 2025, they need better answers — maybe it's still Elgton Jenkins, but it didn't look like it on Sunday.
