Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles took down Patrick Mahomes and the back-to-back, reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs with a dominant 40-22 victory in Super Bowl 59 on Sunday.
Hurts was awarded the game's MVP trophy after completing 17 of his 22 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles' dual-threat quarterback also led his team in rushing with 72 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries.
Despite his team's demoralizing defeat in Super Bowl 59, Mahomes took some time to praise Hurts during his postgame press conference.
Mahomes described Hurts as a "winner."
"The one thing I've always respected about Jalen is that he's a winner," Mahomes said. "... You have to find ways to win with the football team you have around you. That's what I've learned through my NFL career and that's what he's come in and done his entire career.
"If he needs to run the ball, he'll run it. If he needs to throw the ball, he'll throw it. If he needs to make a big play, he'll make the big play. That's stuff that not everybody has."
Mahomes finished the game with 257 yards passing, three touchdowns and two interceptions on 21 of 32 passing. Each of his touchdown passes and most of his passing yards came late in the second half when the game was already out of reach.
Mahomes and the Chiefs got the best of Hurts and the Eagles in their first Super Bowl matchup two years ago, but this time, Hurts got his revenge.
"I said it after the first Super Bowl that [Hurts] would be back," Mahomes added. "He got the better of me today. I'm sure we'll face off again at some point in our careers in a big game like this."
