Patriots Get Bad Steelers News on T.J. Watt

T.J. Watt, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defensive juggernaut, is locked in a tense contract standoff as the NFL’s edge rusher market soars. With training camp looming, the seven-time Pro Bowler’s future remains uncertain, gripping fans and analysts. With enough salary cap space, the New England Patriots have been muted as a possible destination.

Negotiations have snagged on guaranteed money and contract length, stalling progress and the Patriots are ready to pounce. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler shared, “I talked to somebody with the team who said, ‘Look, these are complicated deals to do, but we are working on it. We want T.J. Watt here’”. The Steelers aim to give Watt what he wants and make him the NFL’s highest-paid edge rusher.

Watt’s $21 million 2025 salary pales against Myles Garrett’s $40 million annual deal with Cleveland. Watt, eyeing a contract exceeding this benchmark, skipped minicamp to underscore his demands. His 108 career sacks and 2021 Defensive Player of the Year award justify his push.

Pittsburgh’s commitment to Watt is unwavering, with no trade talks entertained. Yet, recent roster moves, including Jalen Ramsey’s $26.6 million deal, strain their cap. Losing Watt would gut the Steelers’ defense, a risk they can’t afford, but if they do, New England seems ready to snag him.

Watt’s age is a bit of a barrier for the Patriots. New England needs more than an aging edge rusher, who is likely on the wrong side of the productivity scales. But if they pulled it off, it would create a splash, and the Pats faithful are clearly excited by the talk.

The Steelers' front office faces a tight window to finalize terms. Can they balance the cap and Watt’s demands, or will this saga drag on? The clock is ticking, and New England is waiting.
