Pittsburgh Steelers Sign Former Chiefs Running Back To 1-Year Deal

The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to run the ball in 2024. They have spent the past two offseasons investing in their offensive line. This offseason, they also brought in Arthur Smith, who is known for his run-heavy scheme, to be the team’s next offensive coordinator. The backfield already has the likes of Najee Harris and Cordarrelle Patterson, but they have added another piece. Former Chiefs running back La’Mical Perine has signed a one-year deal with the Steelers.

Pittsburgh Steelers Sign RB La’Mical Perine

La’Mical Perine was a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. Last season, he played for the Kansas City Chiefs and appeared in three games, starting in one. He had 77 rushing yards as well as three receptions for 33 yards. While he was by no means the headline running back, he showed that he can come in and be a quality spot starter.

For the Pittsburgh Steelers, he can add some depth to the running back room. While Harris and Patterson will be the featured backs, depth is never a bad thing. Injuries happen, and teams need quality backups. Perine comes with veteran experience and, more importantly, playoff experience. While he only gave the Chiefs minimal production, he was still in the locker room and was around championship pedigree.

2024 Outlook

The Pittsburgh Steelers always seem to have a floor of competence in the NFL. Any fan who follows the game knows about the streak Mike Tomlin has of winning seasons. This season has questions at the quarterback position again as Russell Wilson and Justin Fields compete for the starting job. If Wilson can find his Super Bowl form from years ago or Fields can find success in a new place, this team could be a problem in January. Ultimately, the defense will likely be the reason this team wins many games in 2024.

La’Mical Perine signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers won’t make huge headlines. In fact, there is no guarantee he will make the final roster. However, it does show us how the Steelers are approaching the season. They will run the ball no matter what. This will only help whoever is under center as well as the defense. If TJ Watt, Patrick Queen, and Minkah Fitzpatrick are constantly fresh, this team could be scary in 2024.
