Recently waived 49ers cornerback fails physical with Colts

The San Francisco 49ers recently waived cornerback Ambry Thomas, allowing the Indianapolis Colts to claim him off waivers earlier this week. However, according to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Colts have nullified the claim because Thomas failed his physical with the team. Thomas had missed some time this season with a forearm injury, but had been cleared by 49ers doctors last month, per Schefter. Nevertheless, the Colts medical staff failed Thomas because they determined his forearm injury still had not healed.

The Colts failed former 49ers CB Ambry Thomas on his physical today, one day after claiming him on waivers, saying his previous forearm injury isn’t completely healed. The 49ers cleared him over a month ago. “Ambry feels good and is ready to play,” said Thomas’ agent Drew…

Drafted in the third-round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Michigan, Thomas has had several flashes throughout his pro career, but has also been mired by inconsistency. He played 573 snaps for the 49ers defense in 2023, with 528 of those coming in the slot. Thomas was targeted 48 times, allowing a 68.8 percent completion percentage, 6.8 yards per target, and three touchdowns. However, he was a liability in the postseason and consistently taken advantage of by opposing offenses.

Thomas was slated to join another former 49ers cornerback, Samuel Womack, who has seen significant playing time with Indianapolis. However, now his future is up in the air. Thomas’ agent Drew Rosenhaus told Schefter that he believes Thomas can pass a physical with a different team. Of course, he has a clear incentive to say that.
