Saints may have already made their QB decision without saying it

When the New Orleans Saints start training camp, Tyler Shough versus Spencer Rattler will be the most anticipated battles, but it‘s already clear who the leader in the race is.

Early buzz suggests Tyler Shough is already threatening Spencer Rattler's QB1 hopes

This battle will be Shough’s to lose for one simple reason: he’s Kellen Moore’s guy. Moore has been optimistic when discussing Rattler this offseason. He may view Rattler in a positive light, but Moore made the Louisville quarterback a top-50 selection.

With Derek Carr likely playing his last down as a Saint, there was an expectation the Saints would draft a quarterback. Where that quarterback was drafted would determine their expectations. A first-round pick would have been handed the reigns without question.

Tyler Shough already has the inside track to be the Saints QB1

Shough was drafted right outside of the first round, and the Saints appeared to consider trading into the end of the first round to grab him. The Saints, essentially, valued him as a first rounder. At the least, you can tell the Saints prioritized Shough.

If Shough were drafted in the third round or later, the competition between he and Rattler would look much closer. However, Shough clearly looks like Moore’s guy on the surface. Rattler will be given the opportunity to compete, but if it’s close, the benefit of the doubt will likely go to the rookie. If Rattler wants to win this competition, he’ll have to establish a wide and clear gap.

The battle between Shough and Rattler will be fun to watch. Their both young quarterbacks, who have evoked strong emotions in their short time with the Saints. Rattler quickly became and remained a fan favorite.

While he didn't win a game, Rattler did display flashes of talent. One thing he'll have to do that he didn't last year is show consistency. If Year 2 is as sporadic as his rookie season, it'll be hard to earn the starting role over Shough.

Moore identified his guy and picked him highly. Tyler Shough was drafted to be the starting quarterback. That will more than likely happen Week 1. It’s far from impossible, but Rattler is working from behind to change Moore’s plan.
