The New Orleans Saints are in a state of change. Along their coaching staff, they may have a plethora of spots to fill once they hire a new head coach. Offensive coordinator seems like one opening that will be available for New Orleans sometime soon.
Klint Kubiak spent just one year as the Saints OC, but he is garnering interest from around the rest of the league with New Orleans' staff in flux.
Kubiak to Seattle?
The Seattle Seahawks will interview Kubiak in-person on Friday for their open OC position on staff. This is the second time he has spoken with Seattle about the job.
They fired their now former OC Ryan Grubb last week after one season.
Landing a second interview is always a good sign for getting a job, regardless of if it's in the NFL or not.
According to Nick Underhill and Mike Garafolo, Kubiak seems like a leading candidate to be the next OC with the Seahawks. The former said that there's momentum building for him to land there, while the latter says he's in the driver's seat for the job right now.
Kubiak’s time with the Saints feels like it’s coming to a quick end. I don’t perceive it as much of Kubiak’s own fault, though. He did a good job this past season in his first year with the team, all aspects considered.
To begin this season, the Saints offense kicked off the year with two 40-point performances. They were healthy then. Kubiak’s pre-snap movement & play action calls fit nicely with Derek Carr & the downfield targets in New Orleans.
Rashid Shaheed was blooming into a legit playmaker on offense before his injury. Alvin Kamara was producing at a career pace.
As injuries mounted, particularly on the offensive line, the offense took a stark step back. They weren’t getting enough time to take as many deep shots in the passing game, and the rushing attack had limited explosive plays.
Needs improvement
I will also relay the notion that Kubiak’s second half adjustments are still to be determined.
On multiple occasions, the Saints would begin a game smoothly on offense in the first half, followed by a slow-moving, lethargic second half of play because of changes that the opposing defense made at the half.
All in all, I think Kubiak is a gifted young play-caller with the scheme type that has plenty of the NFL enamored right now. Him getting another chance in Seattle makes plenty of sense, since New Orleans is still deciding who will be their next head coach.
