The New Orleans Saints will be hoping to continue an impressive streak when they take the field in Week 1 of the 2024 season.
Entering the 2024 season, a lot of people are already counting the New Orleans Saints out. Analysts are convinced this will be another mediocre year for the team, and the franchise will be forced to start a rebuild. Unfortunately, a lot of fans feel the same way.
The good news is people’s opinion don’t determine wins and losses. The Saints have to go out a play each game, and they will decide their actual reality. That all gets started on Sunday, when New Orleans hosts the Carolina Panthers. Fortunately for the Saints, they are one of the best Week 1 teams in the league.
Actually, New Orleans is the best Week 1 team in the league; that’s evident in the impressive streak the team will put on the line Sunday. The Saints currently have the longest active streak of Week 1 wins, coming out victorious in the last five season openers. They’ll try to extend that to six on Sunday.
Saints enter 2024 with the longest active Week 1 win streak
A season-opening win is only relevant if you close out the year strong as well, but it’s great to see New Orleans has been getting the seasons started right the last five years. The team’s last Week 1 loss came against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018, losing a 48-40 shootout.
Since then, it’s been all wins for New Orleans, defeating the Houston Texans 30-28 in 2019, the Chicago Bears 21-9 in 2020, the Green Bay Packers 38-3 in 2021, the Atlanta Falcons 27-26 in 2022, and the Tennessee Titans 16-15 in 2023. Aside from the 2021 win over Green Bay, the wins haven’t been incredibly dominant, but New Orleans has started each of the last five seasons 1-0.
With a rebuilding Carolina Panthers team coming into the Superdome on Sunday, the streak should definitely remain alive, but you never know what to expect in this era of Saints football. That’s especially the case with it being the first week of the regular season.
