It can be argued that in today's financial climate, the going rate for a standout quarterback is $50 million per year and going up.
And that creates a San Francisco 49ers issue.
Is Brock Purdy the guy? Is he the guy at $60 million APY? At $50 million APY?
The Niners' so far answer, apparently, is "no.''
Purdy can play in the final year of his rookie contract next season which will pay him $5.2 million. And if the Niners don't believe in him? They can leave it that way.
The good news? There is a reported offer.
More good news? Ownership is saying nice things about Purdy.
“I know we want Brock here for a long, long time and I believe we will make that happen,” 49ers owner Jed York said.
The bad news - for Purdy, anyway?
NFL insider Jason La Canfora is reporting that Purdy received an offer of $45 million per year from the 49ers. ... and to many fans, that represents a "slap in the face.''
After a 6-11 season and a last-place finish in the NFC West, GM John Lynch and the 49ers need to fix a host of issues. ESPN's Adam Schefter is suggesting that Lynch is fully in support of a new deal for Purdy.
And there are signs of that support. San Francisco gave up a mountain of draft capital when it traded up with the Dolphins while giving up three first-round picks in 2021, 2022, and 2023 to draft Trey Lance ... and then watched as Purdy beat him out.
But now? Fans seem to think the Niners should pull the money trigger and show more faith.
"I hate us …. Give him the 55," one San Francisco fan wrote.
"Purdy said don't slap me in the face with that nonsense," another fan wrote.
We don't actually know Purdy's response here. But given that he obviously hasn't signed any proposal? Assuming his view is that this is an insult might add up.
