Star Trek: Lower Decks' finale surprisingly introduced two new Captains, one for Starfleet and one for the Klingons. Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 sent the USS Cerritos to close a series of quantum fissures that have mysteriously opened up across the galaxy. As part of the investigation, Lt. Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) visits her Klingon friend, Ma'ah (Jon Curry), on Qo'noS for help gaining access to a fissure that has appeared in Klingon space. Beckett's friend Ma'ah (Jon Curry) and his brother, Malor (Sam Witwer), ultimately help Mariner, and she learns that the rifts in spacetime are not natural phenomena.
Eventually, Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) and the Cerritos crew learn that they are the only ship able to save the universe from a devastating soliton wave. Although Captain Freeman has faith in her crew, she initially questions whether the Cerritos is the right ship for the job. Throughout Star Trek: Lower Decks' five seasons, the crew of the Cerritos have become like a family, and in the end, they all work together to save the universe. After a permanent portal to other quantum realities forms, Starbase 80 takes up a position at the entrance to the wormhole.
Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Ending Gives USS Cerritos A New Captain
Jack Ransom Becomes The New Captain Of The USS Cerritos
After the events of Star Trek: Lower Decks' season 5 finale, Captain Freeman accepts a position at Starbase 80 to "supervise the missions going into the rift." This leaves the USS Cerritos in need of a captain, and Commander Jack Ransom (Jerry O'Connell) steps up to fill that role. While Ransom may have felt like a caricature in his earliest episodes, he has proven himself to be a capable officer on numerous occasions. Ransom often acted as a supervisor for the lower deckers, and he found creative ways to encourage them to work together.

Paramount+ may have said goodbye to Star Trek: Lower Decks, but the adventures aren’t ending just yet thanks to a lifeline for the beloved crew.
Jack Ransom's growth as a character has been particularly noticeable in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5, and the entire season has been leading to this moment for him. In one of his first decisions as captain, Ransom makes both Lt. Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Lt. Mariner "provisional first officers," placing them in competition with one another to see who will ultimately become the Cerrito's new number one. Ransom then chooses his new warp catchphrase — "Engage the core" — which perfectly suits him as a character, despite Boimler and Mariner's protests.
Star Trek’s Klingon Lower Decker Becomes A Captain
The Klingon High Council Gives Ma'ah His Own Fleet
After Boimler and Mariner help out Ma'ah in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5, episode 4, "A Farewell to Farms," he becomes captain of Malor's bloodwine delivery ship, with his brother as his first officer. However, Ma'ah receives a much more impressive promotion in the Star Trek: Lower Decks' finale. After a confrontation with Captain Relga (Roxana Ortega), Ma'ah and Malor flee to the Cerritos, where they are granted asylum. Relga nearly tricks Captain Freeman into handing the two Klingons over by faking a transmission from Freeman's husband, Admiral Alonzo Freeman (Phil LaMarr).
Captain Ma'ah has proven himself to be a genuinely honorable Klingon and an ally of Starfleet.
In the end, the Klingon High Council deems Relga's actions dishonorable and transfers her fleet to Ma'ah's command. This can only be good news for the Federation, as Captain Ma'ah has proven himself to be a genuinely honorable Klingon and an ally of Starfleet. Ma'ah's brother and first officer, Malor, also helped devise the final solution that the Cerritos used to save the galaxy. Captain Ma'ah and Malor seem poised to become strong leaders among the Klingons, even as their Star Trek: Lower Decks story comes to a close.
