Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 5 Announced As The Final Season By Paramount+

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will come to an end with season 5, which is its final season on Paramount+. The highly anticipated Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 premieres July 17 on Paramount+ after a 2-year wait, following its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 14. In 2024, Paramount+ ordered season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which is currently in production.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 5 Announced As The Final Season By Paramount+

CBS Studios and Paramount+ announced that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will return for a fifth and final season. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 5 will be six episodes, with the series' five-season run totaling 46 episodes. Strange New Worlds season 5 will begin filming later this year. Strange New Worlds executive producers and co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, and Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman, issued the following statement:

“From the very beginning, STRANGE NEW WORLDS set out to honor what STAR TREK has always stood for — boundless curiosity, hope and the belief that a better future is possible. We’re deeply grateful to Paramount+ for the chance to complete our five-season mission, just as we envisioned it, alongside our extraordinary cast and crew. And to the passionate fans who’ve boldly joined us on this journey — THANK YOU. With three more spectacular seasons ahead for you to see and enjoy, this adventure is far from over.”

Why Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Is Ending With Season 5

A Five-Year Mission Has Become The Norm For Star Trek On Paramount+

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ending with season 5 follows an established pattern. In 2024, Paramount+ ended Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks after five seasons. Strange New Worlds follows suit, although with only a six-episode final season. Star Trek: Picard ended in 2023 after three seasons, which was always the plan. Star Trek: Prodigy was canceled by Paramount+ during production of season 2, but both seasons streamed on Netflix, although Prodigy ended with two seasons.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' announced ending is indicative of the sweeping changes at Paramount Global, which is being sold to Skydance Media. The booming Star Trek franchise of the early 2020s gradually coming to an end is a casualty of Paramount clearing the decks for its new owners. The reduction of Star Trek on Paramount+ series reflects the uncertainty ahead for Paramount and the Star Trek franchise. Yet, considering the USS Enterprise's mission statement, it's oddly fitting Strange New Worlds ends with a five-year mission.

Our Take On Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Ending With Season 5

There Are Still 3 More Strange New Worlds Seasons To Come

Captain Pike Black Suit

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ending with season 5 is disappointing, but not surprising, given the direction of Star Trek on Paramount+ in the last couple of years, and the sale of Paramount Global to Skydance Media. Strange New Worlds season 5 only consisting of six episodes is more surprising, considering Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks ended with 10-episode final seasons. Perhaps some of Strange New Worlds season 5's episodes may be feature-length or extended episodes.

The silver lining, however, is that there are still three seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, totaling 26 episodes, coming to Paramount+. There are also two seasons of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy as well, so there will be plenty of Star Trek content over the next 2 years. If Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 5 (and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2) premiere in 2027, then they will mark the 10th anniversary of the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery and close out a full decade of Star Trek on Paramount+.
