Perhaps the Steelers could find a quality replacement for Arthur Smith with Mike McCarthy.
He might not be perfect, but Arthur Smith has shown signs of improvement for the Steeler's offense. There have certainly been inconsistencies in both Smith's play calling as Pittsburgh's offensive coordinator and his player's performances. One thing is definite, Smith has found ways to constantly show he is a coordinator who is qualified for the job and willing to try and find ways to succeed.
Right now, the offense hasn't gone to new heights where Smith could be finding his name in plenty of Head coaching discussions this offseason. Perhaps the black and gold's offense will be able to find some sort of high-quality consistency that will get him in some interviews. There are only 32 top jobs in the NFL, but it seems like there will be plenty of openings this offseason.
There are a couple of obvious coaches who will likely be fired between now and the end of the season. Giants, Jaguars, and Cowboys are just a few spots to seem prepared to find a new coach to take the reigns.
Dallas is an interesting team as they have hit a downward spiral after coming up short in the playoffs in years prior. Perhaps the Steelers and Cowboys could be an interesting match.
Why would the Cowboys want a coach like Smith to take over? Well, it seems like they might want other people, but Smith plays a brand of football Jerry Jones loves. He wants a team that can run the ball and play a physical brand of "old-time" football. Smith would fit that bill, and it would be foolish for him not to leave the Steelers as offensive coordinator for any top spot in the NFL.
When it comes to Dallas, Mike McCarthy is going to be let go at any moment. He might last the rest of the season, but his contract is set to run out. Many were shocked that he was brought back this campaign after another disastrous playoff outing last year. With how much of a toll this tumultuous season has likely taken on McCarthy, it is also possible that he could take time away from football.
If Smith were to leave for the Cowboy's top job, or somewhere else, then it could be an interesting option for McCarthy. He has only held Head coaching roles in the recent past, but he has a lot of offensive coaching on his resume. Many might not know this, but McCarthy is from the Pittsburgh area. If he still has family in the Steel City, then he could welcome a return to his hometown.
A lot of things would have to happen between now and any potential hire of Smith or McCarthy, but don't rule it out completely. We will see where McCarthy's head is at but finding a spot to rebound in a place like Pittsburgh could be a perfect opportunity for him if the offensive coordinator spot became available. The remaining schedule will be the guide for the future of both coaches.
