Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Last of Us Part II and possibly The Last of Us season two.No One Will Save You and Booksmart star Kaitlyn Dever has officially been cast as the infamous Abby in the second season of The Last of Us, and that is perfectly fine by original game star Laura Bailey.
Taking to her X/Twitter account, Bailey shared Max's announcement that Dever has now been cast in the role and will thus play a pivotal role in season two of the hit series, and offered her all of her support. She wrote:
Huge congrats, Kaitlyn! So excited to see Abby’s evolution in your performance! Let me know if you want a workout buddy.
Coming via THR, the character description for Abby reads as follows: “Abby is a skilled soldier whose black-and-white view of the world is challenged as she seeks vengeance for those she loved.”
“Our casting process for season two has been identical to season one: we look for world-class actors who embody the souls of the characters in the source material,” said showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann in a joint statement. “Nothing matters more than talent, and we’re thrilled to have an acclaimed performer like Kaitlyn join Pedro [Pascal], Bella and the rest of our family.”
Reports that HBO were looking for one of the key characters in the second season of The Last of Us, Abby, emerged towards the end of last year. And it seems rumors that the production of the series had reached out to one fan-favorite actress for the role were true. Fans have been vigorously debating on social media about who should play her, and while many names have come up, with No One Will Save You star Kaitlyn Dever being high up on everyone's wishlist. While Dever was a long-held favorite for the role of Ellie, she will now join the cast of The Last of Us as Abby.
In the game, SPOILER ALERT, Abby is the daughter of the doctor that Joel kills when he rescues Ellie at the Fireflies headquarters, so she seeks revenge. The second season will focus on her and Ellie's journey, both standing up for the values they believe to be right, which puts them in opposite places.
Kaitlyn Dever Is a Fine Choice for Abby in The Last of Us
Dever made her debut in the television film An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong in 2009, and has appeared in several notable titles. On the small screen, she participated in episodes of Modern Family, Private Practice, The Mentalist, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Dopesick, among others. Her big break, however, would come in 2019 with the critically acclaimed comedy Booksmart.
The actress led the cast of Olivia Wilde's directorial debut alongside Beanie Feldstein. The movie follows two friends who are excellent students, but feel that they have wasted their youth. As their graduation approaches, they decide to make up for lost time and live unforgettable experiences before leaving for college.
That same year, Dever demonstrated her great versatility and acting talent by starring in the Netflix drama Unbelievable, where she played a completely different character than the one from Booksmart.
In 2023, she finished establishing herself as a big star thanks to the science fiction thriller No One Will Save You, which became one of the big surprises of the year. Not only that, she even has some experience in video games, having provided the voice for Cassie Drake in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. All of which makes her a fine choice for the role of Abby in HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us.
