Steelers' Arthur Smith Explains Exactly What Makes Justin Fields So Special

When the Pittsburgh Steelers brought in both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields to be their quarterbacks for the 2024 season, much of the focus was rightfully placed on Wilson's veteran leadership and extensive experience in the NFL. However, it’s important to recognize that Fields, too, possesses impressive leadership qualities and has demonstrated them throughout his young career.

Drafted by the Chicago Bears with high hopes of becoming the franchise's future, Fields faced various challenges in solidifying that role over three seasons. While he struggled to find consistent success on the field, he earned the respect and admiration of his teammates in Chicago. Many were genuinely upset to see him go, including stars like Jaylon Johnson and DJ Moore, who had formed strong bonds with Fields during their time together. Their disappointment reflects the impact he had in the locker room and the trust they placed in him as a leader.

Recently, Steelers insider Brian Batko had an insightful conversation with Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith. During their discussion, Smith took the opportunity to express his admiration for Fields, gushing about how special of a player he is.

"There's no drama to him. He doesn't try to live through his avatar or create a perception. That's probably why he was so endearing to his teammates in Chicago. ... Extremely coachable, extremely bright."

Smith believes that Fields' personality is a significant factor in what makes him such an effective leader. His natural charisma and approachability enable him to connect easily with his teammates, which, in turn, simplifies Smith's task of coaching him. During his time with the Bears, Fields faced a challenging situation that hindered his development. However, in Pittsburgh, he seems to have found not only a more supportive environment, but also a coaching staff that appreciates his talents.

Smith has expressed genuine enjoyment in working with the young quarterback, emphasizing that their shared experiences create a strong bond between them. Both Smith and Fields have something to prove after their former franchises gave up on them, and this commonality strengthens their connection. Smith continued to elaborate on this dynamic, highlighting how their mutual determination to succeed drives their collaboration and motivates them to achieve great things together in Pittsburgh.

"Same thing as a play-caller, you get in this business, people start making excuses, rationalizing ... put whatever they want on social media or make sure certain narratives get leaked out. He's old school."

Wilson was named the starting quarterback, but a calf injury has kept him sidelined for the season so far. Rumors suggest that Wilson is recovering well and may be ready to start soon.

If that happens, it would send Fields to the bench but also provide him with valuable time to learn, potentially setting him up as the future of the Steelers franchise at the quarterback position.

Steelers' Justin Fields Has Shown Potential In The Steel City

In his first five games, Fields has shown flashes of potential. He led the team to three victories but has recently suffered back-to-back losses. However, these defeats cannot be placed solely on Fields, as the entire team struggled in those games, demonstrating poor play across the board. Despite the challenges, Fields has performed admirably in a new environment, and there is growing optimism about his long-term potential.

Nonetheless, it appears that Mike Tomlin still sees Wilson as his best chance to win games in 2024. When the Steelers traded for Fields, they communicated their desire for him to learn from Wilson, which could position him as the future of the team.

Fields has seized his opportunities and impressed the coaching staff with his positive attitude and work ethic. As Wilson nears a return, Steelers fans are left eagerly anticipating what will unfold at the quarterback position moving forward.
