The Pittsburgh Steelers made shocking news on Wednesday morning. Steelers insider Gerry Dulac revealed that the team would bring Cam Sutton back to Pittsburgh on a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum. Sutton had left Pittsburgh to join the Detroit Lions in March 2023, signing a three-year deal worth $33 million.
Sutton started all 17 games for the Lions in his single season with the team. However, he was released after an arrest warrant was issued for him on charges of domestic abuse. Sutton didn't turn himself in until two weeks after the warrant was issued, and the Lions quickly cut him from the team. He finally surrendered at the end of March and was booked into jail.
Sutton's return to the Steelers is an exciting move considering the football talent Pittsburgh is getting. They are also getting tremendous value by signing him to a veteran minimum contract. While his legal issues paint a grim picture, the organization had a very good relationship with Sutton and appears happy to help him out during this difficult situation.
Sutton spoke to the media following the news of his return to the Steelers. During his time with the media, Sutton revealed the truth behind how his return to Pittsburgh came about.
“Just kind of early in the offseason. Just taking it one day at a time and seeing what was next for myself. Just letting the days play out. Just had a great relationship with the organization and the coaches just checking in on my well being. From a business standpoint just seeing what the next opportunity would be. We are here now and I am ready to put my best foot forward.”
Given Sutton's recent legal issues, he began the interview by acknowledging that there was much to discuss. He expressed his gratitude for being back in Pittsburgh and emphasized his determination to put his past behind him and hit the ground running.
“It’s amazing. Came into a great foundation with this organization and it is still the same way to this day. The people and obviously the players and continuity. Just being back around this atmosphere is very heartfelt and just lighthearted really. I am just here to be myself.”
For Sutton, returning to the team that never wanted him to leave is a significant opportunity. Reports indicate that the Steelers were saddened by his departure. While his return is a positive move, it comes with concerns, particularly his recent legal issues and delayed response to the arrest warrant.
Steelers' Secondary Gets Much Better With Cam Sutton
The Steelers know Sutton better than anyone, and Pittsburgh was his best chance for another shot in the NFL. The team had a need for him in their cornerback room, and his addition bolsters their defense.
With improvements across the board, Sutton's return enhances their defensive playmaking capabilities, making his comeback a substantial benefit for the Steelers.
