The Pittsburgh Steelers' season is officially over. The Steelers lost their Wild Card matchup against the Baltimore Ravens by a score of 28-14. The Steelers ended the season on a five-game losing streak and Mike Tomlin extended his playoff losing streak another year. The Steelers went another year of starting slow in the playoffs and there doesn't seem to be a solution. Many players after the game were frustrated after a failed attempt to lead the Steelers to a seventh Lombardi trophy. One player in particular wasn't happy with the effort of his teammates and felt that the team wasn't ready for the big stage.
DeShon Elliott was not pleased after the loss to the Ravens. The Steelers went into halftime down 21-0 and could not figure out the run game for the Ravens. When it came to making big stops down the stretch, the defense did not have an answer. When asked about it, Elliott was short but precise with his answer.
"S**t the bed." said Elliott.
The Steelers' defense allowed Derrick Henry to do whatever he wanted against it, rushing for 186 yards and two touchdowns while Lamar Jackson added another 81 yards on the ground. Pittsburgh's defense is supposed to be one of the best in the league, but failed to show it when it counted. The Ravens were able to get whatever they wanted, especially in the first half to control the game from the jump.
Many fans were hoping to see more fight from the Steelers, but it seemed that Pittsburgh didn't want anything to do with the Ravens. Elliott, who has been a nice addition for the Steelers, has been blunt in the past when it comes to his teammates. He has quickly understood what it means to play Steeler football and he agrees that the product put forth was not it.
The Steelers now enter another offseason with an early exit from the playoffs. With many questions across the roster, Omar Khan needs to bring in players that will buy into the culture that Pittsburgh has set forth. Elliott, who has become a fan favorite, was quick to speak his mind on the team from the Kansas City Chiefs loss on Christmas Day to now the playoff embarrassment. He wants teammates that want to play the game of football and turn this organization around.
The Steelers have a lot of questions to answer this offseason, on both sides of the ball. If the organization wants to turn this lack of playoff success around, they need to make some tough decision when it comes to personnel. They need guys that will buy in to what they want to do. They haven't been able to do that in their last five games which has led to them another quick appearance in the playoffs.
The Steelers are turning into the Marvin Lewis-led Cincinnati Bengals; getting to the playoffs but not getting past their first game. With another quick exit from the playoffs, Tomlin and Khan have to make some type of change to turn this around. They cannot continue to underperform when the playoffs roll around or both will be looking for new homes.
Not only do they need players that buy into their system and style of play, but they need guys that are gritty and want to play that AFC North style of football. The Steelers for five straight games have been outplayed and out hustled by their opponents. The organization needs to take a big look in the mirror this offseason or fans will see a similar result next season -- repeating the cycle that they seemed to stuck in.
Will the Steelers ever get past the first round with Tomlin's current culture and coaching style? Will Pittsburgh ever stop s**ting the bed when it comes to big games? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
